ABOUT THE VILLAGE:

Aumelas

The village of Aumelas is pleasently secluded but conveniently situated to explore the Languedoc region from the National Parc des Cevennes in the Gard to the medieval citadel at Carcassonne. Montpelier and Beziers airports as well as the beaches of the Mediterranean are a 30/40-minute drive away.

The village is surrounded by hills and open countryside perfect for walkers and cyclists, with a rich variety of wild flowers, herbs and trees. The medieval castle ruins and chapel perched on the hills overlooking the village are the focal point of the area, reached by a “botanical path” that is maintained by the local community association. Public tennis courts and an area for Pétanque are within walking distance.

There are several award-winning organic wine producers locally who will welcome you for tastings and the occasional concert. Local shops, restaurants and services are available in the neighbouring villages of Vendemian and St Paul de Valmalle which are a five- and ten-minute drive away while Gignac (15km distant) is the nearest market town with two supermarkets, an excellent butcher, friendly wine-merchant, Michelin-starred restaurant and other facilities.

The UNESCO site of St Guilhem le Désert is close by: one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its abbey and remaining cloisters. You can bathe at the mouth of the Gorges de l’Hérault, ride the river in canoes and swim in its deep pools, visit the astonishing Cirque (canyon) de Navacelles, explore modern pottery at nearby St Jean de Fos, enjoy wonderful food, jazz and wine in Montpeyroux, listen to Baroque music at the Abbaye de Valmagne or modern classical music in Montpellier and view stunning exhibitions there and in Sete and Lodeve.
